Hogenakal water falls lies on the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border. Both states lay claim to it and till today it is a disputed issue. The Tamil Nadu government with Karunanidhi as the chief Minister announced that a dam will be built at Hogenakal falls to provide drinking water to the districts of Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri. He laid the foundation stone for the dam in April 2008.Karnataka immediately opposed this plan as they beleive that Hogenakal belongs to them. There is good reason for that.Hogenakal is a Kannada word.
Later due to the pressure from the UPA government and due to the fact that elections were being held in Karnataka in May,the construction of the dam was postponed.Soon after the elections when BJP cam into power in Karnataka the Tamil Nadu government announced that the dam will be built within Tamil Nadu territory. But the fact is that Tamil Nadu has not sent the plan of the dam to Karnataka. So we cannot be sure whether Tamil Nadu government's statement completely true.
Right now the Hogenakal Dam issue is dormant as the Tamil Nadu Government's statement has been assumed to be true.Problem may soon arise if Tamil nadu do no keep to their word.
However an amiacable solution can be reached by negotiations. Both governments can jointly build a dam at Hogenakal to provide drinking water to the people of both the states.Environmentalists and Naturalists are completely opposed to this plan as they believe that the dam contruction of the dam will a diastrous effect on the environment.
